Looking at the vibrant landscapes of James Tytler, you could well
believe that he hailed from the Mediterranean rather than the cool
climes of Scotland.
He was born in Aberdeen in
1948.
After studying at Grays School of Art, Aberdeen, Tytler taught Art &
Design at Invergordon for a time. Drawn, like many another artist, to
the bright lights of London, he taught for a few years, then took the
plunge and went
professional in 1978.
In the 80s and 90s Tytler built a strong reputation publishing elegant
Victorian-style pastels, often of children at play, at which he
excelled. Influenced by his travels, his preference shifted towards
the pure colour of the Impressionists, and his vibrant contemporary
acrylics reflect the hot, heady landscapes of Provence and the Cote
d'Azur. He has exhibited in Switzerland, Germany, UK, and last year
held a successful exhibition in the United States.
